The Home Grow Tent - The Good, The Bad And
The Ugly
So you're looking for a home grow tent so you can finally
start growing healthy plants indoors - Great idea! Or is
it?
In this article we'll take a look at some of the pros and
cons of the amazing home grow tent, and help you make an
informed decision when it comes to buying or building your
own.
The Good: Starting with the obvious, a home
grow tent allows you to grow plants indoors. This in itself is
a benefit in that it saves space in the garden and prevents you
from relying on outdoor conditions. However, the less obvious
benefits make the prospect of owning a home grow tent a lot
more exciting!
Because the environment within a home grow tent is so
controlled, it allows you create the optimal atmosphere to
ensure your plants grow as healthy as possible. This just isn't
possible in your back garden. This also means you can grow
plants that perhaps you wouldn't be able to grow in your local
environment, and because the settings within the home grow tent
can be altered, you can practically grow anything you want!
Home grow tents are also amazingly energy efficient. Any
good home grow tent or closet will have a white, reflective
inner lining (usually Mylar) to maximize the lighting and
temperature conditions. You can consciously grow the plants you
desire without wasting vast amounts of energy and running up
huge electricity bills.
The Not So Good: Unfortunately, with every
amazing discovery or creation there's a downside. And with the
home grow tent, it's cost. Home grow tents can cost anywhere
from $100+, which by no means is cheap. And aside from the
actual tent or closet, you still need to purchase the equipment
used for monitoring, heating and lighting the conditions
inside. So bear that in mind.
Also, setting up the equipment and optimizing the conditions
can take time to get right. It's not always easy. Plus, as with
all equipment, they will require maintenance so keep that in
mind before you jump into this head first. Some people think
home grow tents are not really suited to the beginner. But as
with all things: practice makes perfect.
The Ugly: I thought I'd throw this in for
good measure and it is just that. They're ugly! Of course it
depends on personal taste, and I have seen worse looking
furniture, but just consider whereabouts in the house you're
going to place this big tent or closet! Ultimately, it does
have a purpose, and function does outweigh appearance so I
guess it is a fairly negligible downside.
So there you have it: the good, the bad and the ugly of home
grow tents. Despite their downsides, they're definitely a great
product for the keen or experimental gardener, just be aware of
what you're getting into before you make any major
decisions.
